"Just Pretend" is an alternative metal track crafted by Bad Omen's frontman, Noah Sebastian, and lead guitarist, Joakim Karlsson. It delves into the tumultuous dynamics of a toxic relationship, a relentless push and pull. Things are strained between the couple, but Sebastian masks the pain, avoiding the truth lurking beneath. He's confident that eventually they will reconcile, and in the meantime, he'll just pretend.
Sebastian explained:
the song "kind of started ironically." With his characteristic confidence, the Bad Omens frontman aimed to make a point about the predictability of modern active rock music, which often struck him as monotonous. He laid down a simple guitar track and riffed on melodies with an exaggerated, cocky tone, almost mocking the genre's typical macho style. But, as he wrapped up the chorus, he realized the song held untapped potential to be really sick, so he started taking it more seriously. Collaborating with Joakim Karlsson, they refined it over a few days, shaping it into the final product.
Lyrics
I'm not afraid of the war you've come to wage against my sins
I'm not okay, but I can try my best to just pretend
So will you wait me out
Or will you drown me out?
So will you wait me out
Or will you drown me out?
I can wait for you at the bottom
I can stay away if you want me to
I can wait for years if I gotta
Heaven knows I ain't getting over you
I know the pain that you hide behind the smile on your face
And not a day goes by where I don't think I feel the same
So will you wait me out
Or will you drown me out?
So will you wait me out
Or will you drown me out?
I can wait for you at the bottom
I can stay away if you want me to
I could wait for years if I gotta
Heaven knows I ain't getting over you
We'll try again
When we're not so different
We will make amends
'Til then I'll just pretend
Weigh down on me
Stay 'til morning
Way down, would you say I'm worthy?
Weigh down on me
Stay 'til morning
Way down, would you say I'm worthy?
I can wait for you at the bottom
I can stay away if you want me to
I could wait for years if I gotta
Heaven knows I ain't getting over you
We'll try again
When we're not so different
We will make amends
'Til then I'll just pretend
Weigh down on me
Stay 'til morning
Way down, would you say I'm worthy?
Weigh down on me
Stay 'til morning
Way down, would you say I'm worthy?
