Velvet Revolver - Fall To Pieces - Meaning of the song
The members of Velvet Revolver had been through wild bouts of drug addiction and alcoholism, which were in many ways a byproduct of their previous bands' rock stardom.
"Fall to Pieces" is about their trials, particularly those of Weiland, who wrote the lyric. He stated that the song addresses two issues:
1) Dealing with his heroin addiction.
2) His deteriorating relationship with his second wife, Mary.
Weiland felt like he was "falling to pieces" in both cases.
Musically, the song was built around a riff created by Slash. The guitarist could certainly relate to the song's sentiment: he was once declared medically dead after collapsing near an elevator in his hotel after suffering from a drug overdose. Paramedics rushed in to save him, administering an adrenaline injection that saved his life. He signed himself out of the hospital that night, returned to the hotel, and flew to the next stop on the tour, unfazed.
When Velvet Revolver performed this song at Scott Weiland's anniversary party in Maryland, he dedicated it to his wife, explaining that she was one of the people who helped him overcome his addictions and alcoholism.
Mary Forsberg, Weiland's second wife, published her memoir, Fall to Pieces, in 2009, named after this song.
Fall to pieces - Lyrics
It's been a long year
Since you've been gone
I've been alone here
I've grown old
I fall to pieces, I'm falling
Fell to pieces and I'm still falling
Every time I'm falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
I keep a journal of memories
I'm feeling lonely, I can't breathe
I fall to pieces, I'm falling
Fell to pieces and I'm still falling
All the years I've tried
With more to go
Will the memories die
I'm waiting
Will I find you
Can I find you
We're falling down
I'm falling
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
